What happened in the SNU.GOUV.FR Breach?

DataBreach.com Team · January 13th 2026, 7:00 pm EST

In December 2023, the French government's Service National Universel (SNU) platform, snu.gouv.fr, suffered a significant data breach affecting approximately 150,000 people, including young volunteers aged 15 to 17 and their legal guardians. The Ministry of National Education and Youth confirmed that the cyberattack resulted in the exfiltration of sensitive personal information such as first and last names, postal addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers. While authorities stated that no passwords, banking details, or identity documents were compromised, the stolen data exposed the minors and their families to a heightened risk of targeted phishing campaigns and identity theft. In response, the ministry filed a criminal complaint, notified the CNIL (France's data protection authority), and issued warnings urging affected users to remain vigilant against suspicious communications.
