In June 2020, Promo.com, an Israeli-based video creation platform, experienced a significant data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of users. The breach was attributed to a vulnerability in a third-party service utilized by Promo.com, leading to unauthorized access to user data. The compromised information encompassed first and last names, email addresses, IP addresses, approximate user locations based on IP data, gender, and passwords that were encrypted, hashed, and salted. Despite these security measures, there remained a possibility that the passwords could be decoded. Reports on the scale of the breach varied, with estimates indicating that between 14.6 million and 23 million user accounts were affected. The breach was publicly disclosed on July 21, 2020, when Promo.com became aware of the security vulnerability and initiated an internal investigation to assess the impact.
