In June 2022, OpenSea, a leading NFT marketplace, experienced a significant data breach involving the unauthorized exposure of user email addresses. The incident occurred when an employee of Customer.io, OpenSea's email vendor, misused their access to download and share these email addresses with an external party. OpenSea promptly notified its users, advising them to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts resulting from the breach. The company collaborated with Customer.io and law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter. Customer.io confirmed the involvement of a senior engineer in the unauthorized data sharing, terminated the employee, and implemented enhanced security measures to prevent future incidents.
