What happened in the LinkedIn Breach?

In May 2016, LinkedIn experienced a data breach where email addresses and passwords, originally hacked in 2012, were exposed and offered for sale on a dark market site. The passwords were stored as SHA1 hashes without salt and were quickly cracked after the data release.
