In December 2018, BlankMediaGames—the developer behind the popular online game Town of Salem—suffered a major data breach that compromised over 7.6 million user records. Hackers exploited vulnerabilities in the site's phpBB forum software and leveraged poor password practices, such as administrative password reuse, to gain unauthorized access to the servers. The breach exposed sensitive data including email addresses, usernames, IP addresses, browser user agent details, hashed passwords (stored using the phpass algorithm), and records of user activity and purchases.
